I work from good clear photographs, usually basing the painting on one main photo while using other photos as reference for colouring and overall likeness.

Photographs can be sent through the post – I would recommend copies of the photos if they are precious. Photos can also be e-mailed to me. If you are taking photos for a commission, try to imagine the photo as you would like the final painting to look, considering the animal's position and the lighting. The background is less important and can easily be changed. The quality of the final painting will have direct relation to the quality of the photos I am working from. The more clarity and detail, the higher the quality of detail I can include. If the photo was taken by a professional photographer, the permission of the photographer will be needed before I am able to paint it for copyright reasons.

Visiting the subject is possible, to meet and get additional photos if this is practical. There is a charge for this, please contact me for more information.

Completion Time

Leave at least 8 weeks for the painting to be completed. This could be more or less depending on the commission size and detail and current workload/waiting list but an estimate will be given before the painting is started, and once details are finalised. This time frame needs considering if the commission is intended for a special occasion for instance a birthday or Christmas.   

Payment

Once details are discussed and agreed upon, a 50% deposit is required before I start the commission. Payment by personal cheque payable to Kathryn Nichols.

Finished Painting

I will send a photo image either by post or e-mail of the finished painting to ensure it is to your liking before sending the real thing. The outstanding balance will then be paid, and once received I will send the final painting. Delivery charges will be at current Royal Mail prices sent by special delivery to ensure it arrives safely.

Framing

Framing is available with a wide selection of frames to suit all tastes and styles or the painting can be sent unframed for you to frame yourself if you prefer.
